AAJA-NY Resume Critique on Saturday, Oct. 17 — It’s Free!

What: AAJA-NY is hosting its annual free resume and clip critique for its members. We’ve recruited high-level broadcast, print, design, photo and online journalists to conduct the critiques. Companies represented so far include:

Who: It’s open to all registered AAJA-NY members who RSVP (see below).

When: Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10am to 4pm. Each one-on-one critique will be scheduled for 30-minute time slots, so the available slots are:

10-10:30am
10:30-11am
11-11:30am
11:30am-12pm
12-12:30pm
12:30-1pm
1-1:30pm
1:30-2pm
2-2:30pm
2:30-3pm
3-3:30pm
3:30-4pm

Where: The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism at 219 W. 40th St. between 7th & 8th Aves.

How: Those wanting to have their resumes critiqued must do the following:

    1. Make sure your AAJA membership is active. If not, please go to www.aaja.org/membership/join, and register.

    2. RSVP by Friday, Oct. 2 to Anne Marie Cruz at annemarie_cruz@peoplemag.com.

    In your RSVP, please specify what field you’re in (broadcast, print, online, photo, design) and which time slots you prefer. (Not everyone will get their preferred slots, but this will help us sort out the appointment schedule.)
    
    3. On Oct. 17, bring a valid photo ID for the security team at CUNY.

    4. Bring several copies of your CV, as well as copies of your clips.

    5. If you have a DVD of your on-camera work, please bring your laptop in order to play it for your critiquer.

Other important tidbits:

**Please note that once you are assigned a critiquer, you will have the opportunity to email your resume and clips in advance of Oct. 17, so that s/he will have time to read your submissions without eating into your 30 minute critique session.

**Also, we need about 10-15 volunteers (who are also active AAJA members) for three-hour shifts to help check folks in and show them to their respective rooms once they get to the PEOPLE offices. Volunteers will get to pick which critiquer they’ll work with on their resumes/clips; we will take the first 10-15 people to offer their help.

The New York chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association would like to invite you to its inaugural Scrabble without Scruples fundraiser.

Unlike traditional Scrabble, teams in this tournament will be able to buy “cheats.”   For example, you can trade out a letter for $5, consult a dictionary for $20, or invent a word (with a definition, of course) for $30.

When: Saturday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m.

Price: $15 in advance, $20 at the door

*            possible panel topics for the NYC High School Journalism Conference at Baruch College on Dec. 15th

*            the voice-coach session that’s being planned
